Dr. Curtis Elam Biography

Dr. Elam practices by the philosophy that he treats his patients in the same manner he wants his wife and daughter to be treated – with compassion. He joined Fort Sanders Women’s Specialists because he believes patients often need more specialized care than a single, general OBGYN can offer.

Rather than referring patients to outside physicians, he believes they are better served by the extensive experience of a doctor “across the hall.” Dr. Elam brings general OBGYN experience and is trained in a variety of surgical procedures, including pelvic prolapse, laparoscopic and robotic hysterectomy, and robotic vaginal suspension. Dr. Elam also brings specialized experience, as he is the only gynecologist in East Tennessee who is trained to perform a robotic Burch urethropexy for patients who do not want to have a mesh procedure performed.

Dr. Elam received his medical degree from The University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1985 and completed his internship at Charleston Naval Hospital and his residency training at Vanderbilt University Hospital in 1992. During his residency, he received recognition from the training staff for his proficiency in Laparoscopic skills. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1982 and honorably discharged in 1991.

Dr. Elam began private practice in Knoxville in 1992 and has also served as an investigator in clinical research. Dr. Elam is affiliated in several laparoscopic societies including the National Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, and the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery. He also is a Fellow of the American College of OBGYN and a member of the Society of Robotic Surgeons. Dr. Elam is committed to maintaining expertise in women’s health, so he regularly takes courses to keep up with the latest advances in medical management and surgical techniques. He attended the Master’s Laparoscopic Course in Chicago, Illinois, a course reserved for individuals who exhibit excellent laparoscopic surgical skills and who have devoted their practice to the management of surgical procedures in a minimally invasive manner.
